Community Health and Cholera Prevention: Michael Cercasov & Silvia Denys

During a severe Cholera outbreak in 2012, the Grand Boukan community established an Oral Rehydration Point (ORP) with the support of Noumenm and América Solidaria Haiti to provide life-saving intervention locally – a treatment, that otherwise would have only been accessible in bigger cities.

Since then, the ORP has been maintained by a group of local volunteers, who were trained in Cholera treatment and prevention. Michael and Silvia worked together with the health volunteers to further their skills in first aid intervention, family planning and treating basic illness so that they are better equipped to raise awareness for health and hygiene issues and to acts as health multipliers in the community.

Michael Cercasov has worked in the field of emergency medicine and intensive care for over 13 years. Michael has traveled and practiced his skills in many different parts of the world – in Eastern Europe, South America, and Africa.

Silvia Denys works mainly in community waste management, but she has also worked in the areas of first aid, agriculture, and IT. She has supported the work of UNICEF for many years.
