It’s all but a long journey of self-cultivation

Hong Gang does not believe in splitting his personality between private and corporate life. As chairman of a company that focuses on sustainability, Gang will share how he deals with global issues in a corporate setting, and how he and his team were able to turn a nearly bankrupt state-owned company into a thriving and sustainable private enterprise.

Gang will explain the role and impact of personal integrity in founding and managing a company. In his quest to become a good citizen, Gang calls for deep self-cultivation as an answer to the temptations of the modern world.

About Hong Gang:
Hong Gang is a Chinese private entrepreneur and co-founder & chairman of Greatview Aseptic Packaging.  Today, Greatview is among the top three global aseptic packaging companies, with production facilities and operating companies both in China and in the EU, and with the highest fiber content sourced from sustainably managed forests. Greatview was the first company in China to perform a carbon footprint audit at the plant building stage, and to neutralize its CO2 emissions. Gang has been through all of China’s major development stages over the past 30+ years and has accumulated unique insights by working for state-owned institutions, western multinationals as well as for private Chinese enterprise. Gang is an alumnus of Zhejiang University, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Thermal Physics 32 years ago.  He has a Master’s degree in Development & Economics from Sussex University in the UK.

Creating Changemakers: Encouraging students to dream again

What is the purpose of a great education? asks Mustafa Naseem, Director of the Innovations for Poverty Alleviation Lab (IPAL). In a country that is said to blame the outside world for all its tribulations, and which the outside world sees as largely dependent on international aid, Mustafa talks about his experiences empowering his countrymen and women to become change makers, and taking the fate of their country into their own hands.

His interests lie at the intersection of technology, policy and entrepreneurship geared towards solving global development challenges.
Mustafa graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a Masters in Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICTD) on a Fulbright Scholarship. He has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the ATLAS Institute Director's Fellowship, the Dale Hatfield Research Scholars Award, and the Center for Policy Research (CPR) Young Scholar Award.

Prior to founding PIM, she worked at Standard Chartered investment banking division as well as at Narada Foundation, where she built the capacity of grassroots social entrepreneurs and NGOs in China.

Making ”Mission Impossible” possible: Helping Chinese companies go from 0 to 100 in CSR

It starts with ‘why’: why Corporate Social Responsibility? Jacob will talk about his personal story of how he got started in the CSR consulting industry and how he sees the development of CSR in contrast with traditional ‘feel good initiatives’. Using China’s top-three internet companies as case studies, Tan will demonstrate different levels of CSR with actions plans of how university students can engage themselves in social innovation movement. Learn from him why it is so important for Chinese companies to incorporate CSR into their core businesses, why this is extremely difficult to achieve, and why they have been successful anyway.

About Jacob Tomas:
Jacob Tomas (Tan Yaxing) is a serial entrepreneur in social innovation, and now the CEO of Maker Sustainability Consulting (MSC). After backpacking in more than 20 countries, he’s started to help companies in China be more responsible by improving the triple bottom line: profit, people and planet, with strategic solutions tailored to diverse situations to enhance companies’ positive environmental and social impact.
