Field Trips

You didn't think we forgot about field trips, did you?

We were out in the field, and came back with amazing ways to explore New Orleans - differently.

Can Your Mobile Phone Combat Harassment? — Street Interviews in the French Quarter

Taking a walking tour of the French quarter with the Jean Lafitte National Park service will give participants a chance to get a fun look at one of the United States most popular and culturally interesting neighborhoods, while learning important historical facts about the city of New Orleans.
After the tour you will interview people on the streets about their experience with street harassment, in preparation for your workshop with Emily May, founder of Hollaback – and get first-hand experience what it means to fight against street harassment.
The rest of the day, you may eat, shop, and sight-see in one of America’s oldest neighborhoods.

Starting Young — School Visit and Audubon Park

In preparation of the education workshop with Ken Simon, Fellows will visit a local school to see first-hand how small children can grasp concepts like peace-making and global citizenship.
After the school visit, you will take a walk through the historic Audubon Park. Located in Uptown New Orleans, the park has been frequented by the people of New Orleans for over a century.
Following the walk through the park you will have an opportunity to explore Magazine Street, a six-mile-long thoroughfare in the Garden District featuring some of the best antique stores, art galleries, craft shops and boutiques to be found in the city.

The Power of You — Youth Empowerment Project’s Village

Fellows will see how a small community organization teaches youth to mobilize their community in the event of a disaster, with a trip to the Youth Empowerment Project’s Village. The Village offers an effective and innovative approach to ensure that youth who were not successful in the traditional school system, for whatever reason, receive the individualized support they need to finish their secondary schooling and go on to other post-graduate opportunities.
Jennifer Hardin of Evacuteers will join us as we see how two small community programs band together to support some of the city’s most vulnerable citizens during times of emergency.
After a trip to the Village, you will have a chance to walk along the Mississippi River and explore the many sites the historic French Quarter has to offer.
