Getting About

New Orleans has buses, taxis, trolleys, ferries, even a steam boat. So what's the best way to get about?
Taxis and Cabs:
Most taxis in the city charge about $3.50 per mile. Some reliable cab companies in the city are:
Alliance |
American Taxi |
United Cabs, Inc |
Veterans Cab |
Yellow Cab |
Bus and Street Cars:
New Orleans has an extensive public transport system. Operated by the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority, city bus and streetcar lines offer a convenient, affordable way to get around New Orleans. For $1.25 one-way you can get to most areas of town. Much of the city's fleet has been replaced by new, bio-diesel buses with large windows that offer scenic views during the ride.
NORTA currently is operating 30 bus routes throughout New Orleans and you can find maps and schedules for them, as well as streetcars, from their site: www.norta.com. NORTA also has an app (Mobile RTA) and provides information to Google maps so you can easily plan your trip by selecting the transit feature. You can buy a 1, 3, or 5 day “Jazzy Pass” for unlimited rides during your stay. Passes can be purchased at most streetcar ticket vending machines or Walgreens (a popular pharmacy with many locations throughout the city). You can also purchase a pass ahead of time here, but please make sure to leave ample time for the pass to be mailed to you.
